This year, among the novelties of domestic weapons , the Black Swift pistol, aka Strike One, attracts special attention. The weapon is really quite interesting, both in terms of the fact that it is just a new pistol, and in terms of the way the bore is locked. Of course, one can argue long and hard whether this type of weapon can be considered domestic, but why do we need all this demagogy, it is important that there are weapons, which means we need to figure out what kind of bird the Black Swift is, and what it is better for use the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL.
The Black Swift pistol, or Strike One for the foreign market, is the brainchild of Arsenal Firearms, which calls into question the fact that this is a domestic weapon. Still, the concept of “domestic” implies not only that the idea was born in the head of our compatriot, but also that weapons should be produced by a domestic manufacturer, and not “foreign”. However, many question the fact that the domestic arms industry could master the production of this pistol in high quality. I think that I could. You can even do the impossible, with the help of a long lever, but a swear word, and if you are also interested in high-quality production of everyone – from the plant director to the cleaner, and not only financially if all requirements are met, but also in the form of de-bonuses, or even dismissal , in case of deviation from the norm, the quality will increase to heaven. As soon as the pistol appeared in the form of the first sample, everyone immediately rushed to discuss its uniqueness, emphasizing that the weapon is fundamentally different in terms of the barrel locking system from all other pistols that were previously. Perhaps it’s worth starting with this question, since for many the weapon automation system is a dark forest, which you don’t even want to understand, but the general principle in almost all automation systems is very simple, you just need to put everything on the shelves. So, what can I say about the uniqueness of the principle of operation of this weapon … There is nothing supernova in it. In fact, the barrel locking system is a modified Browning system, but it is impossible to say that the Swift barrel locking system was torn off from some model. Unique – no, modernized – yes. Moreover, the modernization has clearly benefited. From a technical point of view, I would call Beretta-like (92) pistols closest to such a system, since here and there the locking element moves vertically, and the locking occurs due to the fact that the so-called insert enters the vertical grooves of the housing-bolt . But more on that below, while we figure out what advantages the gun received over its competitors, and, despite the manufacturer’s statements, they exist and they will only become more over time the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL.
First of all, it should be noted that the manufacturer managed to lower the barrel in the pistol, which made shooting from it much more comfortable. But this is not a weapon innovation, and before the Swift there were models of a pistol with a reduced barrel, this is even to some extent the norm for all new samples. Usually, barrel reduction in this weapon model is associated with the same barrel locking system, but we all know that this was quite successfully implemented in other models. Quite often, in the descriptions of this pistol, information slips that the trigger is equipped with a safety device that protects it from accidental pressing. However, when looking at photographs of this weapon, nothing of the kind can be found, the trigger looks quite ordinary and does not stand out in anything remarkable. But information about that there is protection against accidental pressing is not taken from the ceiling, everything is simply assembled inside the trigger, and only a small pin, which is visible on both sides of the trigger element, gives out the presence of the device. Actually, the weapon does not have other external devices for protecting against an accidental shot. Well, the last feature that is noted in the reviews of this pistol is the design of the magazine and the way it is removed. The fact is that the store is held by a leaf spring, which has two folds in the form of teeth included in the slots of the store itself. The double magazine release button is nothing more than a cylinder, in the center of which there is a smooth narrowing. Finally, we got to the most interesting moment in any weapon – the principle of its operation. The basis for the automation of weapons, as mentioned above, was the scheme proposed more than a hundred years ago by one of the greatest gunsmiths Browning, but it has undergone a rather profound modification. So the main positive aspect of the updated system was that the barrel of the weapon moves only along its axis, being directed by several “rails” to prevent its rotation or displacement the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL. This made it possible to significantly increase the accuracy of the weapon, and most importantly, increase its rate of fire, although this is a rather controversial parameter for a pistol. I will try to briefly describe the weapon automation system, omitting general details. When the trigger is pressed, a shot occurs, powder gases tend to push the bullet out of the barrel of the weapon, at the same time, a sufficiently large pressure is created in the barrel itself, which, in addition to pressing on the bullet, presses with the same force on the bottom of the cartridge case, trying to throw it out of the chamber towards the shooter. But the cartridge case is supported by the shutter, which does not allow it to simply fly out of the chamber. In the case of the Black Swift pistol, the bolt is also not in free motion, but is rigidly connected to the barrel using a U-shaped insert. This insert, by its branching, covers the barrel of the weapon between the chamber and the tide on the surface of the barrel, and at its base has a figured cutout through which a fixed pin, fixed in the frame of the pistol, passes. Thus, when fired, the sleeve transmits an impulse to the casing-bolt, which, in turn, pulls the barrel of the weapon behind it through the liner. And nothing would work if not for this vertically movable insert. Due to the fact that there is a figured cutout in its lower part, when the barrel moves back, this liner is lowered, while the protrusions on its side surfaces come out of engagement with the casing-bolt, which allows it to “unhook” from the barrel after some distance and further to continue its movement on its own, in splendid isolation the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL. At the same time, two protrusions on each side of the liner become something similar to guides for the casing-bolt, but naturally they are not, such interaction between the parts even after disengagement is necessary to ensure normal operation when the casing-bolt and the barrel of the weapon are engaged. So, after some time after the joint movement of the barrel and the casing-bolt, they are separated, the barrel stops, and the casing-bolt continues to move back, removing the spent cartridge case and throwing it away. During its reverse course, the casing-bolt pulls out a new cartridge from the magazine, inserts it into the chamber and rests against the breech, starting to push it forward. When all this happiness moves in the opposite direction, the interaction of the curly cutout in the locking insert and the pin that passes through the frame of the weapon again occurs, this causes the locking insert to rise and securely lock the bore of the gun again. I think that those who delved into the schemes of operation of other pistols with automatics built according to the scheme with a short barrel stroke, caught the clear presence of the spirit of Browning in the Black Swift system. Of course, I do not accuse anyone of plagiarism or something else bad, the system is really new and has not been used in this form before. But is it worth calling a “revolutionary” design in which only one element is actually changed? Even taking into account the fact that this led to an increase in the reliability of the weapon, increased its survivability and had a positive effect on the combat qualities of the pistol, I personally believe that this is nothing more than a continuation of the development of Browning’s idea and there is nothing to claim “revolutionary” here. But this is my opinion, so it may differ from other people’s opinions. Revolutionary was Browning’s original bore locking system, the Barnitzke locking principle was revolutionary, although it did not become widespread and famous, many people really proposed original schemes that are fundamentally different from the well-known ones, but the Black Swift is not the case. Still, I see the difference between the “revolutionary” and the new, and in fact it really exists and it is significant the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL.
On the other hand, it is clear that the development is really promising, and despite the big advertising words to attract the attention of the masses, the pistol is really beyond praise in its characteristics, however, the mass production of weapons has not really begun yet, and as you know, the difference between the bench model and the end result can be very tangible. At the moment, the pistol is planned to be offered for 9×19 ammunition, including domestic armor-piercing versions of this cartridge, 9×21 IMI, my favorite .357SIG and .40S&W. They say that this pistol should replace the PM in service with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, though they are silent about how much such a replacement will cost, but it is clear that it will not be cheap at all. The Development: WHY WE LOVE THIS WEAPON
The SPEED pistol was developed by the Russian private company Arsenal Firearms and is a modern self-loading pistol with an original barrel locking system, a plastic frame with an ergonomic grip and no protruding parts, and a large-capacity magazine. These weapons are intended both for the armed forces and law enforcement agencies, as well as for shooting sports and self-defense of citizens. Strike One pistols, designed for the foreign arms market, are available in four calibers – these are 9×19, 9×21 IMI, .357 SIG and . 40 S&W the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL. The SPEED pistol, created for Russia, is produced only under the 9×19 cartridge, but it can use 7N21 and 7N31 cartridges, which are more powerful than those intended for the civilian market, despite the fact that the weapon with them functions reliably and safely.
SPEED / Strike One, first shown to the general public at the IWA-2012 exhibition, represent a new stage in the development of domestic design and production of short-barreled weapons. However, these pistols will be produced at factories in three countries, including Russia, for different markets and consumers, taking into account the legislation of various states. The manufacturing company has production in Russia, Austria and Italy, but its headquarters is in Russia. Arsenal Firearms is owned by Dmitry Streshinsky, a well-known Russian businessman and weapons collector, and Nicola Bandini, an Italian.

The idea of the locking system used in it belongs to Dmitry Streshinsky and Nicola Bandini, which is reflected in one of the patent applications. Prototypes of these weapons were produced and tested in Moscow at the Arsenal Firearms industrial site, and pistols for IWA 2012 were manufactured at the Tanfolio plant. The developers of the Swift pistol constantly consulted with employees of Russian special forces units. As a result of numerous changes and improvements made to the design, the weapon has good combat and operational qualities. The weapon is distinguished by a thin profile of the plastic frame and the absence of a manually operated fuse with protruding levers, which makes the weapon convenient and quite invisible when carried concealed. Automation works according to the scheme of using recoil with a short barrel stroke. The locking of the trunk is carried out with the help of a swinging larva. The coupling of the pistol barrel with the shutter-casing is provided by a vertically moving U-shaped locking cylinder with a lower ledge, driven by a copier groove at its base.
The locking larva enters a special groove in the breech of the barrel and the grooves of the shutter-casing. The larva covers the trunk from the sides and bottom, and the groove in the trunk prevents the larva from moving in the longitudinal plane. On the outer surface of the larva there are lugs that fit into the grooves on the inner surface of the shutter-casing. In the lower ledge of the larva there is a through inclined groove. Through this groove passes the transverse pin of the barrel lock. At the moment preceding the shot, the barrel and the shutter-casing are located in the extreme forward position. The pin holds the locking head in the up position. The lugs of the larvae connect the barrel and the shutter-casing. When the shutter-casing and the barrel begin to move back after the shot, the interaction of the inclined groove of the larva and the pin reduces the larva.
When the barrel and the shutter-casing are separated, the barrel stops when its breech meets the steel liner of the frame. The shutter-casing then moves back by inertia. With an ejector, he removes the spent cartridge case. During the reverse movement, when the shutter-casing moves from the rearmost position forward, it sends a new cartridge from the magazine into the barrel chamber. When the barrel moves forward, the locking cylinder rises, firmly locking the barrel and the shutter-casing. One of the most important advantages of the used locking system is the rectilinear movement of the barrel. In Swift / Strike One pistols, the barrel does not drop, like most modern pistols. The automation system used in the design of this weapon is based on the developments of Louis Schmeiser at the beginning of the 20th century. Using the Swift / Strike One pistols as an example, it can be seen that the revival of old, but very good ideas, with their refinement and modern technologies, gives an impressive result. In addition to the main model, Arsenal Firearms also created the so-called carbine pistol with a barrel extended to 300 mm. Various accessories can be installed on this version of the pistol, for example, a fore-end with Picatinny rails and a buttstock the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL. For ease of use by owners with a left dominant hand, the pistol is equipped with a double-sided magazine latch. The weapon is fed with ammunition from box-shaped double-row magazines with a capacity of 17 or 30 rounds, with a single-row exit. The neck of the store window is made with inclined inner surfaces, due to which the attachment of a new magazine is greatly simplified and the reload time of the weapon is reduced. At the bottom of the front of the frame of the pistol there are Picatinny rails, with which a variety of additional equipment can be attached to the weapon. For example, it can be a tactical flashlight or a laser designator, or a guidance unit that combines a flashlight and a laser designator. According to the manufacturer, the resource of the SPEED / Strike One pistol is 50,000 shots per shot. A sporty variant of the Strike One called the AF-1 Strike One Speed was first introduced at the SHOT Show 2015. This model differs only in its lightweight slide-casing, which features adjustable sights and is available in four different CeraKote surface finishes the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL.
New pistol for practical shooters
The first batch of Italian Strike One pistols has arrived in Russia. It is interesting not only for its original design, but also for its history of creation, which is connected, among other things, with our country.
It so happened that I was the first Russian to get acquainted with the Strike concept. This happened in 2008 and then it did not seem to me something significant and worthy of continuation. It was about the design of a pistol with an extremely low barrel, which provided the weapon with compactness and simplified effective shooting at a high pace. The basis of the solution was an original locking mechanism with a vertically moving U-piece.
A locking system with a vertically moving wedge with side lugs, similar to that used in the Strike, was patented in 1928.
In modern pistols, such a device is indeed found for the first time, but it was this locking principle that was used in the 50s of the last century in the Czech ZK 503/1 (/ 2) assault rifles. Their locking units also used a vertical U-shaped contactor – in model 503/1 it was connected to the base with an earring, and in version 503/2 it moved due to the interaction of bevels with mating surfaces the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL.
The lateral protrusions of the lock, which ensure the grip of the barrel with the bolt, also have analogues in the past. For example, such a system is described in a patent issued in 1928 to F. Janicek. In this case, the contactor was O-shaped and actuated like the model 503/2.
On the one hand, the above examples once again confirm the truth of the sayings “everything was invented before us” and “everything new is a well-forgotten old”, and on the other hand, they are a clear confirmation of the endless nature of the evolution of mechanical devices, thanks to the talent and work of ambitious inventors, designers and investors.
Strike One does not copy, but combines the mentioned solutions, moreover, in relation to a compact pistol. Moreover, it is thanks to the use of the U-lock that the pistol acquires a key quality – a “low” barrel, which distinguishes it from the vast majority of currently common pistol systems.
The Strike, presented under the Russified name Strizh, came to Russia in December 2011, and I was among the first to test the pistol by shooting even before it was in the hands of the then President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev at the shooting range.
This happened, of course, not by chance – the “Swift” was offered as a service pistol for the Russian law enforcement agencies and for quite a long time was unofficially “run in” by “specialists”. At this stage, not only some shortcomings of the novelty were identified and eliminated, but also ergonomics were polished, the resource of parts was checked.
As a result, the idea of implementing the Strizh was dissolved in time, and the project returned to Italy, in order to develop at the international level, taking into account the experience already gained.
I must say that thanks to aggressive marketing, Strike One unexpectedly quickly, literally in 2-3 years, became widely known in the most important and most competitive North American arms market the STRIKE ONE SPEED ERGAL. An objective confirmation of this fact is not at all the exhibition activity of Arsenal Firearms and the scope of the dealer network, but the appearance of the model in the nomenclatures of manufacturers of accessories and options (holsters, return mechanisms, sights, etc.), which, as they say, are exchanged.”
Again, no matter how competent and expensive the promotion tools are, it will not work to “push” a dummy into the modern market in the current conditions – the user’s qualifications and a huge range of analogues will get in the way. Here the real constructive originality of the Strike worked, which, together with a spectacular appearance, was able to stir up a pistol swamp, where the Glock dominates, and all other models are somehow similar to each other or tend to be like the Glock. For smart people who want to object to something about the Austrian pistol, just in case, let me remind you that the monthly output of Glocks is approaching 130,000 pieces. And yes, this is not a mistake – 130,000 pistols a month, not a year, not a five-year period. By the way, it makes sense to draw the attention of some domestic arms manufacturers to these figures,

Several Strikes have been operating in Russia since the end of 2014. In general, taking into account the fact that Strike One, at the dawn of its history, worked out many thousands of Russian ammunition and was tested by shooting galleries and shooting ranges in the United States, where a good cartridge is a cheap cartridge, critical problems are very, very unlikely.
As for personal experience, besides the first meeting in 2011, I had the opportunity to shoot from the Strike twice abroad. From the point of view of the declared increased stability of the weapon when fired, everything is true: the low-lying barrel does its job and the gun “goats” noticeably less at any grip compared to the vast majority of “traditional” pistols. For practical shooting, where there is a race for fractions of a second and an increase in the practical rate of fire is vital, this feature is certainly useful. But you need to understand that the choice of weapons, as a professional tool, is carried out by an athlete according to the totality of qualities, ranked individually.
So, one should not expect a quick and massive “change of shoes” of Russian qualified shooters on Strike One. The pistol must live in shooting ranges, earn a reputation in the local market, as it happens in European practical shooting. For example, Strike One has already climbed the podium of the 2018 Italian Championship.
The current price of new items in Russia is around 2500 USD. Taking into account customs duties, certification and other costs, there is a very reasonable pricing. And this should also contribute to the interest in the pistol from Russian shooting clubs.
